Tell me about yourself:
I grew up in Australia and started flying right after school when I was 18. I flew for Virgin Australia back in Australia, and was both cabin supervisor and emergency procedures/service trainer on the ATR72 aircraft. When I turned 21 I applied for Emirates and here I am! I love to travel the world and see all the new places as part of my job, and I also love to try to learn as many different languages as I can! I can speak Japanese and also some Korean but I want to learn Arabic. My favorite movie is View from the Top!!!
Why did you chose this profession?
Hmm… Staff travel benefits? haha no, I don’t really have an answer… I guess it's something I always wanted to do
How long was your journey until to become a flight attendant? Did you move away from your hometown?
For Emirates the process was around 8 months, I knew I had the job after five months but had to wait as there was too many male crew members at the time. I had to move away from Australia to be based in Dubai.
Do you speak another language? Did you study at college or study any other courses?
Just native English, Japonese and Korean. No I didn't... just high school!
How many interviews did you already apply? How did you get it?
It took one online CV scan, an invite to an assessment day and a final interview three months later.. My interviewer said my previous experience as emergency procedure trainer definitely helped my application, and also that I can speak Japanese helps too.
What were you doing when you received a positive answer?
I had just returned back from holiday in New Zealand and just as I got into arrivals in Sydney Airport i received a phone call from a UAE number.. It was one of the best phone calls of my life!
How was your first day at the training?
I was so nervous! I think being in a room with 120 people who you don’t know and being a shy person is a bad idea haha. But my batch mates were really nice and we made fast friends which was amazing. I also remember looking at the emergency procedures manual and the service manual and nearly fainting because I was so worried about how much I had to learn! My first day was also one of my first in Dubai, so the whole thing was kind of a shock to me.

A380 and B777
How was your first flight and where did you go?
My first fight was to Mumbai, India. It was one of the craziest flights I have ever done… I enjoyed it though, the crew were absolutely amazing and at the end of the day thats what really matters.
Getting lost in Shanghai was definitely a bad situation… Nobody speaks English and we didn’t speak Chinese… We had three hours until pickup and were at least an hour away from the hotel by train… but we didn’t know which train to take! In the end we used an internet cafe to get instructions from a Chinese friend back in Dubai printed off to show the taxi driver… So crazy hahah
In your opnion what the positive and negative point in this area?
Positive is getting to make new friends every time you go to work. I love meeting my crew everyday at briefing, the fact that I now have friends living in and coming from all over the world is amazing… Another positive is definitely getting paid to see the world. It is definitely hard work to get there but soooooo worth it when you’re in an amazing city! A negative is being tired ALL THE TIME, and also being lonely especially if you’re based away from home. We do have friends in Dubai, but most times we are at opposite ends of the world… it’s hard to get one or two people together at the same time.

If you’re thinking of doing this job, do it. Especially based out of another country like in the UAE. it’s an amazing experience - living overseas and getting paid to see the world. Some tips is to know the company you are applying for, have some real life examples for your interview and if you get the job HAVE FUN. If you don’t love what you do, whats the point in doing it?

Eu cresci na Australia e comecei a voar depois da escola quando eu tinha 18 anos. Eu voei pela Virgin Australia na Australia e era também comissário chefe voando no ATR72. Quando completei 21 anos eu me candidatei para Emirates e aqui estou eu! Eu amo viajar o mundo e conhecer lugares novos através do meu emprego, e também amo aprender novos idiomas. Eu falo Japonês e também Coreano porém quero aprender Árabe. Meu filme preferido é Voando Alto!!
Porque escolheu essa profissão?
Hmm... Passe livre? hahah não, eu realmente não tenho uma resposta... Eu acho que é algo que eu sempre quis fazer.
Quanto tempo durou a sua jornada até se tornar um comissário? Saiu de sua cidade natal?
Para Emirates, o processo foi aproximadamente em 8 meses, eu sabia que tinha conseguido a vaga 5 meses antes porem tive que esperar por não ter um numero certo de tripulação masculina na turma. Me mudei da Australia para a base em Dubai.
Você tem algum outro idioma? Faculdade ou cursos complementares?
Inglês (nativo). Japonês, Coreano. Sobre faculdade ou cursos, não!
Participou de quantas seleções? Como conseguiu?
Levei apenas meu CV impresso, um convite para o assessment day (A.D) e então entrevista final 3 meses depois.. Meu entrevistador disse que meu emprego anterior na Virgin me ajudou bastante no processo e por eu também falar Japonês.
O que estava fazendo e onde estava quando soube que passou na seleção?
Eu tinha acabado de voltar de férias na Nova Zelândia, quando eu estava no Aeroporto de Sidnei e recebi a ligação de um numero dos Emirados (Famosa G.C)... Foi o melhor telefona da minha vida!
Como foi seu primeiro dia de treinamento?
Eu estava nervoso! Eu acho que estar em uma sala com 120 pessoas que você não conhece e por ser uma pessoa tímida é uma má ideia haha. Mas meus colegas foram realmente legais e fizemos amizade rápido e foi incrível. Também me lembro de olhar para o manual de procedimentos de emergência e o manual de serviço quase desmaiando, porque eu estava assustado com o tanto de coisas que teria que aprender! Meu primeiro dia no treinamento também foi a minha primeira vez em Dubai, então tudo aquilo era uma espécie de choque para mim .

Como foi seu primeiro voo e qual foi o destino?
Meu primeiro voo foi para Mumbai na India. Foi um dos voos mais loucos que eu já fiz... Apesar de tudo me divertir bastante, a tripulação era absolutamente maravilhosa e no final das contas era isso o que importava.
Você já enfrentou alguma situação difícil a bordo ? Como você consertou isso?
Ficar perdido em Xangai foi definitivamente uma situação péssima... Ninguém falava inglês e nós não falávamos Chinês.... Tinhamos apenas três horas, pelo menos estávamos há uma hora de distância do hotel usando o trem, mas não sabíamos qual trem pegar! No final usamos a internet e pegamos informações com um amigo chinês para nos mostrar o motorista do taxi... Loucura hahah
Na sua opinião qual é o ponto positivo e negativo nesta área?
Positivo, é fazer novos amigos cada vez que você for para o trabalho. Amo conhecer minha tripulação, e a realidade é de que agora tenho amigos do mundo todo e isso é incrível... Outro aspecto positivo é definitivamente ser pago para ver o mundo. É um trabalho definitivamente difícil, mas vale a pena quando você está em uma cidade incrível! A negativa é estar cansado o tempo todo, e também ser solitário especialmente se sua base for longe de casa. Nós temos amigos em Dubai, mas a maioria das vezes estamos em lados opostos do mundo... é difícil conseguir uma ou duas pessoas ao mesmo tempo.

Se você está pensando em fazer isso, faça. Especialmente com base fora de um outro país como UAE. É uma experiência incrível - vivendo no exterior e ser pago para ver o mundo. Algumas dicas, é conhecer a empresa que você está se candidatando, ter alguns exemplos reais para a sua entrevista e se você conseguir a vaga, SE DIVIRTA! Se você não ama o que faz , qual é o objetivo em fazer isso?
